California - Surf Beach - "THE VEIL"

Description

A moody sunset on a cold, windy day at Surf Beach, California. Surf Beach is near Vandenberg Air Force Base where they launch rockets into space. I call this photo "The Veil" because I wrote a short piece that accompanied the image on my Instagram:

THE VEIL

We associate the word ‘apocalypse’ with end-of-the-world chaos and destruction, but the Greek origins of the word actually mean ‘the unveiling.’ We’ve had a lot of unveiling the last few years, especially in 2020. Many of our long-held institutions, our societal structures, our leaders high and low, our varied and complex relationships, and the sources where we’ve held our Truth, our beliefs, have been crumbling. Or better put, they’ve been unveiled. As the curtains lift and the illusory masks dissolve, we find ourselves in a very precarious landscape. We’ve grown comfortable in our deceptions. They are familiar and have long been embedded into our psyche. Now we stand naked at the edge of an unknown and the unknown can be frightening. Because the truth really hasn’t been unveiled to us fully. We’ve only peeled back one illusion to step into another. The dragon slayed at our feet only prepares us to face the new dragon towering before us.
